Some of the best ice cream in Rome according to the “Telegraph”. I agree with some suggestions, not all of them

1) Fatamorgana (www.gelateriafatamorgana.it)

With flavours like wasabi, Black Forest gateau and chocolate infused with lapsang souchong, this four-outlet chain is one of the city’s more creative emporiums; it’s also rigorously gluten-free. Cones start at €2 for two (small) scoops. The most central branches are in Via Roma Libera 11 (Trastevere) and Piazza degli Zingari (Monti).

1) Gelateria del Teatro

Between Piazza Navona and the Vatican (Via dei Coronari 65/66), this place is famous for combos like sage and raspberry (not to be missed) or ricotta, almond and fig. It’s on the corner of a charming cobbled lane, and there’s no extra charge for sitting on one of the outside tables. Prices start at €2 for a small cone or tub. There’s another branch near the bridge across to Trastevere at Lungotevere dei Vallati 25.

3) Neve di Latte

Right behind Zaha Hadid’s angular new MAXXI art and architecture gallery in the northern suburb of Flaminio (Via Luigi Poletti 6, no website), Ermanno di Pomponio’s gelateria does a few fancy flavours (like balsamic vinegar) but is more focused on perfecting classics like chocolate, pistacchio or hazelnut. And boy are they perfect. Prices start at €2.50 – which includes stool-perching rights.

4) Il Gelato di Claudio Torcè

If you twisted my arm, I’d have to nominate Claudio Torcè’s divine ices as the best in Rome (it’s also one of the best-value, with cones and tubs starting at €1.80). There are eight different chocolate flavours alone, plus savoury forays like gorgonzola. But for me nothing beats the salted peanut flavor. The Torcé mothership in the suburb of EUR is a bit of a schlep, but there is a more central branch at Viale Aventino 59 (Circo Massimo).
